President’s Message by Matt Petersen Last Updated: March, 2018
The ASHRAE Region VIII CRC in San Antonio is fast approaching. I hope everyone who is going has reserved their rooms since Fiesta is closing out that weekend. Also, all members who will be there I know will have a great time. The Alamo Chapter will be great hosts for this CRC and I just wanted to say thanks for all their hard work to make the CRC happen.
Just a quick bit of information for our readers. The San Antonio Fiesta has been around since 1891 when a one-parade event honored the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. ASHRAE was formed in 1959 when it merged with ASHAE (founded in 1894) and ASRE (founded in 1904), both organizations are younger than Fiesta!
What does that mean? Longevity! Organizations that are successful tend to be around a long time. ASHRAE is one of these organizations and it will continue as long as we continue to support it. Be it through membership, research promotions, activities and YEA it will maintain as long as we can keep our membership active. CRCs are one avenue to show new members the camaraderie that is ASHRAE. This will be my 6th CRC that I have been a part of and I plan on continuing past my tenure as chapter president. I hope we all do.
As our year winds down our chapter has a group scheduled to go to Day on Hill, March 27th. This year we have 10 people scheduled to attend and to meet our local representatives in Oklahoma City. We also have our sustainability project where we will be working with a local HVAC contractor on April 6th with Habitat for Humanity.
Please take note that our next chapter meeting is on April 5th with our guest speaker, Pam Duffy, who will be discussing how standards are created and providing us some ASHRAE secrets. This meeting is a dinner event with a social hour starting at 5:00 and dinner at 6:00. We will also be presenting the scholarship winners for the NEOK chapter scholarship as well as the Jack Tumilty scholarship awarded annual to a qualified high school student entering college with intent of an engineering degree.
Our final chapter meeting is in June and will be a luncheon where I will hand the reins over to the incoming chapter president and welcome all returning and incoming chairs. I know NEOK will be in great hands with the new officers and chairs.
I look forward to the CRC in San Antonio and I hope to connect with all of our chapters while at the event.
